In the spirit of celebrating, I am really proud to announce that I have been to 27 out of 54 countries in Africa. This means that I am already halfway to my lifetime goal of visiting all 54. It’s a really big wow moment for me because I literally don’t know anyone else that has been to this many countries in Africa. I’m basically a self-proclaimed Africa guru, so ask me anything you want to know about the motherland 😊 Which country should I go to next? And which African country do you wish to travel to?

Yall tell me why I took a 16-hour cross country roadtrip in Madagascar just to see these African Boabab trees. This was at the top of my list of things to do in Madagascar. I almost tapped out when all of the domestic flights were fully booked. But instead, I hired a local driver and we drove 16-hours in one day! Thank you to that man lol.

It was such a divine experience to be surrounded by the Tree of Life. I meditated, hugged on a tree, drank baobab juice, watched the most beautiful sunset, and reflected on the beauties and complexities of life. I receive it all. I’m only a little upset that I was unable to get a spectacular photo of myself here. It’s the sad reality of solo travel lol.

#joytrip in madeira + a few tips on visiting the island:

1. madeira is a set of 4 islands to the southeast of mainland portugal that is actually closer to africa than europe 🙃

2. they do not have uber. you should download bolt or you can rely on taxi service, public transportation or rent a car. but y’all, the hills be hillin. worse than lisbon. so if you rent a car, ya better be preparedt. and you better really know how to drive drive. for me, public transportation was very clean, convenient, cheap and easy to use 🤷🏾‍♀️

3. funchal is the city center, named after a plant that is used for tea and aroma.

4. madeira island is a good mix of city + nature + island vibes. there was plenty to do and so much to see. the funchal airport is a little less than a 2-hour flight from lisbon and you can get there for as low as 30 euro

5. weather was bute. they say it’s pretty bute year round. it’s one of the warmest european cities to visit during winter (averaging low 60’s)

6. warning - most of the beaches are lined with rocks, not sand. and yes, people were out laying and sunbathing on rocks. people, not me. (there are a few options with sand that you can find)

7. i did not see many Black people. does not mean they are not there, just means i did not see them 👀 (Black people in madeira tap in if you’re around)

8. usa citizens do not need a visa for tourist stays under 90 days. and there are no covid entry requirements.

#joytrip if you’re going to praia do guincho, don’t be like me and leave the beach around 9:45pm and expect bolt or uber to come scoop you. apparently it’s too far. mind you, it was a 15-minute drive from the train station. i was in cascais on the side of the road tryna hitch a ride 😭 so go with a car, a reliable pick-up or make sure you catch the last bus at 8:30pm 🙃
